Our industrial history has been shaped by the availability of forests, hydropower and ports. Establishment of communities and industries has therefore taken place in the river valleys and along the coast.
Between 1870 and 1930, a total of 30 pulp mills were erected in the county and Västernorrland became a centre for cellulose manufacturing. Through the export of raw materials and energy, the region continues to be an important industrial center. This creates conditions for both large international companies and niche tech companies.
In our region, many people work in the process industry. This combined experience and expertise forms a solid foundation for future establishments.
Some of the region's heavier players are BAE Systems, Bucher Emhart Glass, Holmen Iggesund, Mondi, Permobil, Permascand, SCA and Valmet. With the highest number of patent applications in Sweden, we stand out as an innovative region, ready to meet the demands of the future.
